3.12 Travel history - Care and selection of whole blood and component donors (including donors of pre-deposit autologous blood)

Increased and rapid travel of the population may lead to asymptomatic people donating infectious blood. A clear and detailed travel history must be obtained from all donors to minimise the risk of transmission of malaria, Trypanosoma cruzi, Chikungunya Virus, Dengue Virus, Yellow Fever Virus, Zika Virus, West Nile Virus and viral haemorrhagic fevers.

The latest Whole Blood and Components Donor Selection Guidelines and the Geographical Disease Risk Index should be consulted for any donor with a relevant travel history.

Horizon scanning is performed by UK Blood Services to identify new and emerging pathogens which may threaten the safety of donated products. Relevant JPAC position statements are available.
