3.11 Transfusion-transmissible infectious disease - Care and selection of whole blood and component donors (including donors of pre-deposit autologous blood)

Every effort is made to prevent transmission of disease by careful and appropriate selection of donors. This includes ensuring that the donor is provided with clear, understandable and up-to-date information and also ensuring that the donor has understood this information (see chapter 5).

Donors must be assessed for their exposure to any risk of acquiring a transfusion-transmissible infection. The latest Whole Blood and Components Donor Selection Guidelines should be consulted for any donor with a relevant exposure history.
