25.6 Protocol 000001 - blood component dispatch information - Standards for electronic data interchange within the UK Blood Transfusion Services

Two data line structures are defined within this protocol:

  1. A single line containing administrative information (see Table 25.4).
  2. A multiple occurrence line with an entry for each item on the dispatch (see Table 25.5).

To distinguish between the 2 line types, a line type indicator is included as the first field in each line following the line number.

Table 25.6 lists the values used to indicate red cell characteristics.

Table 25.7 list the values used to indicate platelet-specific phenotype.

Line type (field 2)

The dispatch line type is '2'

Unit identifier (field 3)

This is the ISBT 128 donation identification number (data characters with check character, e.g. 'G151797123456L')

Product code (field 4)

This is the component code, and is either:

  • a full 9-character Codabar code, including start and stop characters
  • an 8-character ISBT 128 product code excluding the data identifier characters
Group ABO (field 5)

'A' = group A

'B' = group B

'O' = group O

'AB' = group AB

Group RhD (field 6)

'+' = RhD positive

'–' = RhD negative

Red cell characteristics (field 10)

Each character's position indicates antigen content (see Table 25.6).

'+' = confirmed positive

'–' = confirmed negative

'P' = unconfirmed positive

'N' = unconfirmed negative

HLA flag (field 11)

'Y' = information included in comment field or on separate documentation

[Space] = no information

CMV (field 12)

'+' = CMV positive

'–' = CMV negative

[Space] = unknown

Irradiated (field 13)

'Y' = irradiated

'N' or [space] = non-irradiated

'P' = information is included in the product code

Platelet-specific phenotype (field 14)

Each character's position indicates antigen content (see Table 25.7).

'+' = positive

'–' = negative

IgA (field 15)

'Y' = information included in comment field or on separate documentation

[Space] = no information

High-titre haemolysin (field 16)

'Y' = present

'N' = not present

[Space] = untested

Neonatal (field 17)

'Y' = suitable for neonates

'N' = unsuitable for neonates

'P' = suitability is included in the product code

[Space] = untested

Filtered (field 18)

This field is no longer used

Volume (field 19)

The volume is indicated in millilitres (mL)

Methylene blue (field 21)

This field is no longer used

Clinical use (field 22)

'Y' = suitable for clinical use

'N' = unsuitable for clinical use

Issue type (field 23)

'R' = routine issue

'S' = selected, unmatched

'X' = crossmatched

'G' = autologous
