The cause of Guillain-Barré syndrome is not known but it often follows an infection or immunisation. It probably is associated with auto-antibodies to parts of the peripheral nervous system. This guideline is intended to prevent transferring antibody to a person receiving a transfusion that could then affect their nervous system.
