Conn's syndrome (primary hyperaldosteronism) is caused by overproduction of aldosterone in the adrenal cortex. Aldosterone is a hormone that regulates potassium and sodium levels, as well as fluid balance in the body, thereby maintaining blood volume and blood pressure, helping the body to control stress and maintain a steady metabolic state and normal electrolyte balance.
Secondary hyperaldosteronism is caused by increased adrenal production by medical conditions outside the adrenal gland which stimulates the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone mechanism.
