Education workbook

The intraoperative cell salvage (ICS) education workbook has been developed by the UK Cell Salvage Action Group to support the theoretical aspects of ICS training.

The workbook includes background information relevant to the use of ICS, such as basic haematology. It also provides the learner with in-depth ICS theory, including indications and contraindications, principles of use and the practicalities for each step of the process. Each section concludes with self-directed learning questions to develop the learner’s awareness of their own organisation's ICS service.

The workbook is linked to the ICS competency assessments and can be downloaded as a complete document or in individual sections.

This is the second edition of the ICS education workbook (October 2018).

Education slides

The education slides have been written to accompany the ICS education workbook and are designed to be used as a teacher-led introduction to the subject prior to practical training and completion of the education workbook and competency assessments.

The slides are designed to promote discussion and interactive teaching, rather than as a presentation or lecture, and should be used in conjunction with questioning and group work tasks to allow on-going assessment of the trainees understanding of the subject matter.

Further information for all of the topics covered by the slides can be found in the ICS education workbook above.

The slides are available in PowerPoint Show (.pps) format and can be downloaded as a complete set or in individual sections.
