Blood component codes
Request and allocation process
Chapter 8 of the Guidelines for the Blood Transfusion and Tissue Transplantation Services in the UK (Red Book) includes a section on the introduction of novel components, accompanied by a flowchart to indicate the steps to be taken.
However, when considering the request process for new component codes that are not necessarily considered to be 'novel', and their subsequent qualification activities, colleagues from individual UK Blood and Tissue Services (UKBTS) felt that an in-depth process map that provides clarity on roles and responsibilities, along with more details of actions to be taken, would be beneficial.
A set of documents has been produced that outline the actions taken by Change Management and information technology (IT) support teams within the individual UKBTS, in conjunction with the Standing Advisory Committee on Blood Components (SACBC) and the Standing Advisory Committee on Information Technology (SACIT).
The UKBTS may use these documents as a guide when managing qualification activities that require the use of new component codes.
